Destination Spotlight: Zion National Park - Where Desert Meets Sky
Welcome back to our Destination Spotlight series! This month, we're heading to the stunning red rock wonderland of Zion National Park in Utah. If the Smokies are about misty mountains and lush forests, Zion is their dramatic desert counterpart—towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and some of the most iconic hikes in America.
Why Zion National Park?
Located in southwestern Utah, Zion is a landscape of extremes. Massive canyon walls rise 2,000 feet above the valley floor, painted in shades of cream, pink, and red. The Virgin River has carved this masterpiece over millions of years, creating a desert oasis that attracts over 4 million visitors annually. Whether you're an experienced canyoneer or a casual day-hiker, Zion offers unforgettable adventures.
Best Campgrounds
Watchman Campground - Located near the park's south entrance with 176 sites, this is the most convenient option for exploring Zion Canyon. Open year-round with stunning views of the Watchman peak. Reservations are essential, especially March through November.
South Campground - A smaller, more intimate option with 117 sites along the Virgin River. First-come, first-served from November through February, reservations required other months. Perfect for those who want a riverside camping experience.
Lava Point Campground - For the adventurous! This primitive campground sits at 7,890 feet elevation on the Kolob Terrace, offering cooler temperatures and solitude. Only 6 sites, first-come first-served, and accessible only in summer months.
Must-Do Hikes
- Angels Landing - The park's most famous hike. 5.4 miles roundtrip with chains bolted into the rock for the final half-mile. Permit required (lottery system). Not for those afraid of heights!
- The Narrows - Hike through the Virgin River in a stunning slot canyon. Can be done as a bottom-up day hike or a top-down overnight backpacking trip. Waterproof gear essential.
- Observation Point - 8 miles roundtrip for arguably better views than Angels Landing, without the crowds or exposure.
- Emerald Pools - Easy to moderate trails leading to beautiful pools and waterfalls. Great for families.
- Canyon Overlook Trail - Short 1-mile roundtrip with spectacular views. Perfect for sunrise or sunset.
What to Pack
Desert camping requires smart layering. Days can be scorching (100°F+ in summer) while nights cool down significantly. Lightweight, breathable tees are essential for daytime hiking, but bring layers for evening campfires. A good hat is non-negotiable—the Utah sun is intense!
Essential gear: Water (lots of it!), sun protection (SPF 50+, sunglasses, hat), sturdy hiking boots, and a headlamp for early morning starts.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March-May) - Ideal temperatures, wildflowers blooming, waterfalls flowing. Peak season begins, so book early.
Fall (September-November) - Another sweet spot with comfortable temps and beautiful fall colors along the river. Less crowded than spring.
Summer (June-August) - Hot! But perfect for water hikes like The Narrows. Start hikes at dawn to beat the heat.
Winter (December-February) - Quiet and beautiful, but some trails may be icy. The Narrows is often closed due to cold water temperatures.
Pro Tips
- Use the free shuttle system (required April-October) to access most trailheads—parking is extremely limited
- Apply for Angels Landing permits well in advance through recreation.gov lottery system
- Check the Virgin River flow rates before attempting The Narrows—flash floods are a real danger
- Bring a water filtration system for longer hikes—you'll need more water than you can carry
- Book campsites 6 months in advance for spring and fall visits
- Download offline maps—cell service is spotty in the canyon
- Respect wildlife and never approach bighorn sheep, even if they're on the trail
Beyond the Main Canyon
Don't miss the Kolob Canyons section in the northwest part of the park—far fewer crowds and equally stunning scenery. The 5-mile scenic drive offers incredible views, and trails like Taylor Creek lead to beautiful slot canyons.
